Day 35: The Ultimate Demonstration of God’s Love

In John 15:13–14, Jesus says to His disciples, ‘Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.’ With this profound statement by Jesus as background, let’s look at Romans 5:6–10.

“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”

Paul uses these four different phrases to describe our condition. We were enemies, actually in opposition to God. When we were in that condition, Christ died for us. That is the measure of God’s love for us.

Perhaps you have experienced some doubts about God’s love for you. Those doubts will never be fully resolved until you have grasped the full measure of the condition you were in when Christ died for you.

The cross is not only the demonstration of God’s love for us. It is also the demonstration of our value and worth to Him. Most people would agree that the value of any item is based upon what people are willing to pay for it. Likewise, your value as a person is not what you think your value is, rather your value is what God is willing to pay for you. Amazingly, the price He paid to redeem you was the life of His Son, Jesus. There is nothing God could have given that would be of greater value. Therefore, your worth is greater than anything else in the universe. That fact should astound us!

Prayer Response

Your value as a person is not what you think your value is. Rather, your value is what God is willing to pay for you.
