‘धी ‘रज’ का अनुवाद वेबस्टर के न्यू वर्ल्ड शब्दकोष में ‘धैर्य’ और “अन्त तक निरंतर बने रहने का गुण”, या “बने रहना” कहा गया है। हम यह सीख रहें है कि बने रहने के गुणों के लिये किस प्रकार के मूल्य या आशीषों की आवश्यकता है।

In the last letter I offered two suggestions for cultivating endurance. The first was to make your commitment to Jesus a wholehearted one. In Acts, Barnabas spoke of “purpose of heart” (11:23). You make your mind up that you are going to stick with the Lord regardless—no matter who does or who doesn’t. If your friends don’t, you will. If your family doesn’t, you will. When tribulation comes, you’re not going to give up. That is purpose of heart.

The second principle of enduring came from Hebrews 11:27, where we saw that Moses “forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.” Moses’ faith was related to the unseen. If you and I are going to hold out, the unseen world has got to be more real to us than the seen.

कई वर्ष पहले लंदन में एक स्वीडन के पास्टर की बेटी हमारे साथ रहती थी। वह अंग्रेजी सीखने के लिये आयी थी और उसे मैनें सिखाया भी। वह बहुत सुन्दर व योग्य लड़की थी और मधुर आवाज में गाती भी थी। उसके पिताजी स्वीडन के सबसे बड़े पेन्टिकोस्टल सभा के पास्टर थे। और वह लड़की एक सख्त पेन्टिकोस्टल वातावरण में पली बढ़ी थी।

जब यह लड़की चौदह साल की हुई तो वह स्कूल में अपने दोस्तों के बहुत से बातों को सुनने लगी -जैसे सिनेमाघरों के आनन्द, नाच-गाने और ऐसी बहुत सी बातें। और वह और ज्यादा रूचि रखने लगी। और फिर एक दिन वह अपने पिता के पास गई और कहा, “पिताजी आज तक जिस रीति में आप लोगों ने मेरी देखभाल की और मुझे प्रशिक्षण दिये उनके लिये मैं आपको धन्यवाद देती हूं। परन्तु मैं आपको यह बताना चाहती हूं कि आज से मैं कुछ अलग मार्ग को देखना चाहती हूं। मैं यह देखना चाहती हूं कि यह संसार मुझे क्या दे सकता है। मैंने अपने दोस्तों को केवल कहते सुना है, उसके पिताजी जो एक बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति थे, उसने कहा, “बॉरबरा, मैं और तुम्हारी माताजी तुम्हारे लिये प्रार्थना करेंगे।” उसने बहस नहीं की। उसने कहा, “हम प्रार्थना करेंगे।”

उसी रात, उस लड़की को उसके जीवन का एक अनोखा स्वप्न दिखायी दिया। उसके स्वप्न में उसने दो शहरों को देखा। उसमें से एक बहुत बड़ा आधुनिक और खूबसूरत शहर था। वह शहर चमकती हुई रोशनियों से भरा हुआ था। सारी जगह चमक-दमक थी। घाटी के उस पार दूसरा शहर था जो एक अलग प्रकार की रोशनी से भरा था वह चमक नहीं रहा था और कोई चमक-दमक भी नहीं थी, परन्तु शांत व स्थिर था। जब वह उस सुन्दर, चमक-दमक वाले शहर को निहार रही थी, तभी एक व्यक्ति उससे अपना परिचय देने लगा। वह व्यक्ति संस्कारी लग रहा था और पढ़ा-लिखा व अच्छे कपडे पहना हुआ था। उसने कहा, “मैं आपको शहर की सैर कराना चाहता हूं।” और वह उस व्यक्ति के साथ हो ली।

जैसे जैसे वह बढ़ती रही, उतना ही वह व्यक्ति कुरूप बनता गया। जल्द ही वह उसे पहचान गयी जो स्वयं शैतान था। वह डर कर रूक गयी और सारे शहर की रोशनी एक-एक कर जाती रही और अन्त में सारा शहर अन्ध् ाकार से भर गया। वह मुड़कर दूसरे शहर को देखने लगी तो उसने पाया कि उस शहर की रोशनी उसी प्रकार तेज और साफ थी जैसे हमेशा से रही थी। दूसरे दिन उसने पिता के पास जाकर कहा, “डैडी, मैं आपके साथ चर्च आ रही हूं।” वह एक चतुर लड़की थी जिसने परमेश्वर की आवाज़ को सुना और उस पर विश्वास किया।

जब कभी मैं और लिडिया किसी बड़े आधुनिक शहर में जाते है तो उन बड़े नीयोन लाइट की चमक, आवेश और सुख को देखकर एक दूसरे से कहते हैं, “याद है बॉरबरा का यह स्वप्न?” एक रात सारी रोशनी चली जाएगी। यह बहुत जल्द होने वाला है। सारी रोशनियां जा रही हैं।

(२ कुरिन्थियों ४:१७-१८)। एक और बार पौलुस के वचन को दुहराना चाहूंगाः

“क्योकि हमारा पल भर का हल्का सा क्लेश हमारे लिये बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण और अनन्त महिमा उत्पन्न करता जाता है। और हम तो देखी हुई वस्तुओं को नहीं परन्तु अनदेखी वस्तुओं को देखते रहते हैं, क्योंकि देखी हुई वस्तुएं थोडे ही दिन की है, परन्तु अनदेखी वस्तुएं सदा बनी रहती है”

यही वह बातें हैं जो अनन्त है। वे बदलते नहीं है। वे वचन में है।

वचन में बने रहें। सिर्फ पांच मिनट हर रोज बाइबल के लिये न निकालें । उसे पढ़ें । उस पर मनन कीजिए और उस पर विश्वास कीजिए। उसमें जीयें। पवित्र आत्मा से कहें कि वह वचन आपमें सच साबित हो और वचन आपमें इस प्रकार सच हो जाएगा कि फिर कोई भी वस्तु जो इस संसार की है हमें प्रलोभित न कर पाएगी और यीशु मसीह पर अविश्वसनीय साबित करने वाली कोई भी बात हमें आकर्षित नहीं कर पाएगी। मैं जीवन को हर्षपूर्वक जीने में विश्वास करता हूं कई वर्ष पहले मैंने कर्मवाद से मुक्ति पायी थी परन्तु मुझे इस संसार या इसके कोई भी वस्तु से प्रेम नहीं है। क्योंकि “यदि कोई संसार से प्रेम रखता है, तो उसमें पिता का प्रेम नहीं है” (१ यूहन्ना २:१५)। मैंने हर एक चीज परमेश्वर पिता से ही प्राप्त की है। मैं उसमें विश्वासघात नहीं करना चाहता। मैं उसे अपनी कृतज्ञता और आदर देना चाहता हूं। क्योंकि उसने मुझे अपनी सन्तान और मसीह का उत्तराधिकारी बनाया है और मैं उसकी अच्छाई के लिए उसे आदर देना चाहता हूं। मैं अपनी आंखे उन चीजों पर लगाये रखना चाहता हूं जो अनदेखी है।

मैं यथार्थवादी और व्यवहारिक जीवन जीने वाला हूं। मैं विश्वास करता हूं हर चीज क्रमानुसार होनी चाहिए। मैं अपने खत का जवाब देता हूं और सारे बिल का भुगतान करता हूं। मेरे दोनों पांव जमीन पर हैं, परन्तु मेरी आंखे अनदेखी बातों पर है। हमारे और अनन्तता के बीच एक पतला परदा है। एक साधारण व पुराना गीत कहता है, “कभी कभी मैं स्वर्ग के लिए गृहवियोगी हो जाता हूं।” खैर मैं हो जाता हूं फिर भी मैं पृथ्वी को दोष नहीं देता। परमेश्वर ने मुझ से ऐसा अच्छा व्यवहार किया जिसके मैं योग्य नहीं था। परन्तु ध्यान रखें कि समय से परे भी कुछ बातें होती हैं।

दूसरा एक पुराना गीत कहता है, “यीशु के पीछे मैं चलने लगा गर कोई मेरे साथ न आवे, तैाभी मैं उसके पीछे चलूंगा.. और क्रूस मेरे आगे... न मुडूंगा, न पहली बार मैंने यह गीत सन १६४७ में यरूश्लेम शहर में सुना था और वह एक नवम्बर माह की रात थी। मैं और मेरी पत्नी और हमारी आठ बेटियों को घर छोड़ना पड़ा और हमने यरूशलेम के एक अमरीकन मंडली में शरण प्राप्त की। हम बिना घर, बिना आहार या बिना-किसी भी चीज के रह रहे थे। हमें एक अंधेरी रात में सब कुछ छोड़कर जाना पड़ा। जब मैं उस मसीही मंडली में पहुंचा तो वे यह गाना गा रहे थे। मैंने यह गाना पहली बार सुना था, “गर कोई मेरे साथ न आवे, तैाभी मैं उसके पीछे चलूंगा।”

Don’t Quit

I have two more endurance-builders to share with you. The first one is as important as it is simple: when you fail, don’t give up. Others have failed before you—and I am one of them. One of the devil’s most clever tricks is to convince you that you are a failure and that you might as well give up. He will try to tell you that God has given up on you. Don’t believe him. He’s a liar.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand. (Psalm 37:23–24)

Have you ever fallen? Remember that you will not be utterly cast down because the Lord still has your hand. Do you know how David knew that? Because he had fallen. Terribly. Tragically. He committed adultery and arranged for the death of the man whose wife he had stolen. And yet God forgave him and restored him. David was able to say, “Even when you fall, don’t give up. God will pick you up.”

There was also a man in the New Testament who fell. His name was Peter. Jesus spoke these two verses to Peter knowing that Peter was going to deny Him three times.

And the Lord said:

Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail … (Luke 22:31–32)

What a depth in those verses! Jesus didn’t pray that Peter would not deny Him, He prayed that his faith would not fail. If Peter’s faith had failed, there would have been no way back. So when you fall, stretch out your hand and let the Lord pick you up. And don’t give up—because He hasn’t given up on you.

Finally, remember the prize-giving. Not all the issues of life are settled in the here and now. There are some that remain for the future. Let’s look at the words of Paul written from jail to Timothy:

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7)

Those three achievements go together. If you are going to keep the faith, you have to fight the fight. Faith is a fight. You cannot escape the fight and keep the faith. If you are going to finish your course, you’ve got to fight the fight. Paul said, “I’ve done all three. I’ve finished the race. I’ve fought the fight. I’ve kept the faith.” Then he said, “From now on I’m waiting for the prize-giving.”

Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will give me on that Day … (2 Timothy 4:8)

Paul had been condemned to execution by a very unjust, unrighteous ruler—the Emperor Nero. There had been no justice in his trial, but he said that isn’t the last word. He said there’s going to be another judgment day. There’s going to be a prize-giving. And the judge will be absolutely just. It’ll be the Lord Himself, and He will give me my prize—my victor’s crown.

For many years of my life, prize-giving was a very important part of my school days. And I won many prizes. But there is one prize that still has to be won, and that is only for those who keep the faith, fight the fight, and finish the course. I believe that Paul was true to the end because he saw something beyond time. He looked out into eternity, and he saw the great prize-giving when the gold, silver and bronze medals will be given out. And I think some of us will be rather surprised at who gets the gold medals. It won’t be the speed with which we ran. It will be the faithfulness with which we served. The Lord’s emphasis is on faithfulness. Remember Jesus’ words: “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

For many of us, the days that lie ahead are days that are going to test our endurance. They are not going to be easy. The persecution we endure is going to test one thing above all others: our loyalty—both to the Lord and to the body of Christ. I want to be able to look at my brothers and sisters and say, “I’ve kept the faith. I haven’t been disloyal. I haven’t betrayed you.” I really believe that’s the test that lies ahead of us: the test of character and loyalty. If you will stand the test, glory to God, you will come out like gold that has been tried in the fire.
